Waukesha, Wisconsin, is the county seat of Waukesha County. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and sits along the Fox River. The city was first settled by European-Americans in 1834, primarily by settlers from New England. Originally named Prairieville, it became Waukesha in 1847. Known for its pristine spring water, Waukesha earned the nickname “Spring City” and was once considered a spa town. During the Cold War, Waukesha County housed three Nike Missile batteries, one in Waukesha and others in Muskego and Lannon. From 1956 to 1970, the U.S. Army and Wisconsin National Guard operated a command center at Hillcrest Park. The missile sites initially housed Ajax missiles and later nuclear-equipped Hercules warheads. Waukesha’s history, from its 19th-century origins to its Cold War role, reflects its evolution into a significant Milwaukee metropolitan area city.
